To offer a uniquely broad and intellectually stimulating academic, cultural, and social experience that emphasizes undergraduate research and encourages personal and professional growth.

The Elliott T. Bowers Honors College is a place for highly motivated students looking for a unique educational opportunity. The Honors College provides these achievement-oriented individuals with

  • some financial support
  • opportunities to interact with other similarly motivated students
  • special course offerings leading to an unusually broad educational experience
  • small classes with close contact with our hand-picked faculty
  • the opportunity for early registration
  • access to private Honors Lounge and Lab
  • opportunity to graduate with Honors distinction


   The Honors College is designed to attract and retain highly competent and motivated students and seeks to create an intellectual and social climate that encourages students to develop their potential both in and out of the classroom. To this end, the Honors College creates a community of scholars, wherein both students and professors interact and challenge each other in developing their abilities.

   Specifically, the Honors College provides personalized instruction and mentorship opportunities in supporting the University's overall mission of high academic standards and community service. Graduating with Honors from Sam Houston State University provides definite advantages for students entering graduate or professional school, as well as those starting out in their chosen profession.

The Sam Houston Honors Scholarship 

Incoming freshmen will be given the opportunity to receive the Sam Houston Honors Scholarship. For those who qualify, this competitive Sam Houston Honors Scholarship will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The scholarship will be distributed over a SHSU undergraduate college career no longer than four years, at a maximum of $18,500.

To be considered for the full range of scholarships offered through the SHSU Office of Student Aid Financial Services, students must complete the FAFSA. The FAFSA is available beginning October 1st. The priority deadline for all students is February 1st.

The Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a campus wide event for students to present their research in a formal setting. The URS occurs every Spring semester on the SHSU Huntsville campus. The Spring 2019 URS hosted about 200 presenters and nearly 450 audience members.
